‘LOVE. STYLE. LIFE’ IN THE ORIGINAL OR 5 THINGS TO LEARN FROM GARANCE DORE.
If you have not been acquainted with Garance Doré yet, then you shall understand that we are talking about an illustrator, a blogger and a photographer. And about a Frenchwoman who perfectly speaks English. But the picture would be incomplete if not to mention her as the remarkable author of the best-seller “Love. Style. Life” which I strongly recommend to read.

THE BOOK BY GARANCE DORE LOVE. STYLE. LIFE
When the book “Love. Style. Life” came into my hands, 2 hours of a typical Moscow traffic jam were enough to read the best-seller from cover to cover - a story so sincere and so close to me, a story of a person who had nothing, except diligence, industry and the aspiration to find herself and to express herself by means of the subject that is interesting to her.
I strongly recommend you to read “Love. Style. Life” in English, because the author's voice is heard especially clear in the original, living text.
The reading left not only pleasant feelings (a fine book, good English - this means you will spend your time with pleasure and simultaneously you will learn the language), but also five important points were formulated, so:
5 THINGS TO LEARN FROM GARANCE DORE.
Self-confidence is not the main thing. The main thing is action.
Now many people write “smart” books on how to become cool, rich, happy. And almost in each of them you will read an overused cliché "believe in yourself". Watching life and people, I start doubting that each of those who has achieved success, initially believed in himself and knew exactly that he would succeed. On the contrary, I notice that those creative people, with brilliant ideas, constantly doubt themselves. But what distinguishes a doubting lucky man from a doubting loser? It is the fact that the first doesn't believe in himself, but still follows his dream. Dore's example is a case in point.
At the age of 27 she was an absolute bankrupt, and in 10 years she received one of the most prestigious awards in the fashion world as a blogger. By the way, she was the first blogger who received CFDA award (this award is considered “Oscar” in the fashion world).
Who of us would risk to clamber, suffer defeats and disappointments in himself or herself for ten years? In moments of despair who of us wouldn't turn to the roads more stable, more familiar? And Dore survived because she was following her way. She was afraid, doubted, but she kept following it.
Open the page 78 of the original edition and read the chapter “The 10 steps”. I assure, the flow of inspiration will be powerful.
The reading left not only pleasant feelings, but also five important points were formulated.
Teach yourself (Oh, yes! I believe very much in this point, for example, I learned English and became my own best teacher! And Garance Dore did the same in her sphere. Let's read below).
Since the childhood Dore was dreaming to choose a creative career - she wanted to draw. But, at the insistence of her parents, she spent many years for traditional economic education which wasn't useful for her. As a result, at the age of 26 - 27 when she made up her mind to find fulfilment in creativity, it was already late, and it was too expensive to study illustration. The clock ticked as Garance says. Therefore, she began to teach herself, watching masters, analyzing their technique:
…A year spent at my desk, learning to paint by studying other people’s work and guessing at their techniques, doing a hundred bad drawings for a good one.
And, as you can see, the self-educated Garance is recognized around the world now.
Me reading Love. Style. Life.Work.
Dore writes “I was working like crazy” – and it seems to me, the whole secret of her success lies in this one line.
“I would have to train myself like crazy and totally changed my illustration style…”
“I tried to do it better every day, thought about it every second. I was passionate.”Discover your new dimensions.
Dore viewed herself as an illustrator until the life forced her to create a blog (at the time when blogs were not popular at all). She only wanted to put her illustrations in the blog, and it turned out that she was a talented author. Dore viewed herself as an illustrator and a blogger until fashion weeks and a camera appeared in her life – so, she became also a popular photographer. At some time, Dore worked alone, renting a tiny apartment with a fold-out sofa in Paris, which she jokingly called "а studio", and now she has a huge studio in New York overlooking the horizon and a team of like-minded people.
“I didn’t know it at the time, but I had created something completely new...There were blogs; there were illustrators. There were fashion lovers. But I was the first fashion-loving illustrator with a blog…”
And one more conclusion on finishing the book by Garans Dore "Love. Style. Life": study English! I don't know where and when Dore was learning this language, but she speaks it very well!
Yes, she has a slight accent. But who cares about it if she communicates freely in this language, runs her business in America, etc.? Using the example of Garance Doré it is clearly seen how knowledge of English increases our chances for success in life! So, go ahead!
P.S. To tell you the truth, I'm not following closely Garance's creative activities as an illustrator, a photographer or a blogger. But, I'm following her with pleasure as a constantly developing personality. And while I was preparing this article for publication, Dore already managed to turn the well-known personal blog into the Atelier Doré project and to move to Los Angeles. And what else can you expect from the woman who is confidently going ahead? Only a new inspiring book.
Have you read “Love. Style. Life”? What is your impression?
